What will we be doing?

Over four consecutive weeks, a darkroom specialist tutor will lead you through a range of advanced darkroom practices, including printing on fibre-based paper, selenium toning prints, dodging and burning, digitising negatives and exploring the multigrade system.

This workshop is designed to give you more guided mileage in the darkroom, increase your confidence and ability to use the darkroom independently and advance your understanding of the wide variety of analogue practice. The tutor will work with you individually, responding to your needs and interests.

This workshop is perfect if you’ve completed our Introduction to Black & White Darkroom workshop, or have some experience in the darkroom and a budding analogue practice. If you’re unsure if you have enough darkroom experience, please give us a ring or send us an email at [email protected] to discuss.

What will be provided?

We’ll provide all equipment and chemicals for print development and a pack of fibre-based paper per person. This is all included in the workshop enrolment fee. You’ll get a PhotoAccess notebook and pencil to record your discoveries and make plans and, of course, the opportunity to learn with an experienced analogue photographer tutor.

During the four weeks of the workshop, you’re also welcome to come in during opening hours and use the darkroom at no extra cost (darkroom access is usually $50/day) . However, you will need to bring your own papers. Your film-developing and darkroom chemicals are included in your PhotoAccess membership.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring some of your existing negatives, your curiosity and enthusiasm! We’ll provide coffee, tea and biscuits to keep you going during each evening class, but please feel free to bring along snacks or your dinner if are going to get hungry by 9pm.
