This course will guide you through all the stages of the production pipeline, from initial ideas to festival-ready films. This unique mentored program is for image makers who would like to work in a structured way towards producing a short film supported by an experienced filmmaker, your peers, and PhotoAccess. On completion, your film will be screened at a local venue in the company of your peers and friends/family.

This year, you will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of award-winning Writer/Director/Producer Nathan Hughes, whose work was described by Encounters – the UK’s leading short film festival, as ‘demonstrating a distinctive artistic and cinematic vision’. His work has been supported by The British Council, Reykjavik International Talent Lab, London Screenwriter’s Festival and Creative Europe, and his dramas, docos and design fictions have screened at prestigious international film festivals. Nathan will likely be developing projects alongside this program, enabling valuable insights into the tribulations and triumphs of low-budget independent filmmaking.

In Concept to Short Film, you will initiate a personal film project and develop it over the year through Nathan’s mentorship and guidance, with input and discussion from your workshop peers, and benefit from an opportunity to work in a structured environment. PhotoAccess staff will also be on hand to support and assist you. This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and take your filmmaking aspirations to the next level, working towards a completed film and screening to celebrate your achievements.

We will meet regularly over nine months, developing your ideas, receiving feedback, building new connections and sharing stories, research, and film/video references. You’ll gain new insight into film grammar, technical concepts and production tools and respond to each other’s emerging projects in a supportive environment. While the opportunity to work with and learn from Nathan is key to this workshop, you’ll also benefit enormously from collaborating with your co-participants, acquiring new knowledge, and expanding your network and connections. Nathan is a resourceful, inclusive tutor who cultivates mutually beneficial creative spaces, and participants may find that the support and enjoyment derived from this workshop encourage them to produce work well beyond what they may have imagined or expected.

Concept to Short Film is designed for enthusiastic amateurs and emerging filmmakers, so it would be advantageous to be familiar with the basics of shooting video on a mobile phone and have some awareness of narrative and documentary formats. The workshop will provide insight into the full spectrum of no/low-budget short film production with particular emphasis on resources and techniques to enable you to work independently. If you’d like to discuss the recommended skills or need help developing them, please chat with the PhotoAccess team via an email to [email protected].
