Join artist and photographer Gabrielle Hall-Lomax for a hands-on exploration of chemigrams, a fun and fascinating alternative photographic process!

Chemigrams are a form of camera-less photography where one can paint with various products (such as oil, varnishes, honey, etc.) on the surface of photographic paper and expose them to light to create unique images. The products applied create chemical reactions and distort light, producing individualistic happenings and chance occurrences.

Over four weeknight sessions, you’ll explore different techniques for creating chemigrams, including experimenting with clay, tape, wax, and various chemical reactions. By engaging with different resist methods and developing techniques, you’ll discover how surface manipulation influences the final image.

In the final session, you’ll finalise printing and scan your creations to preserve the images. This workshop is a great way to experience the many facets of darkroom printing and immerse yourself in alternative photographic processes. Darkroom experience is not required and all levels of photographic skill are welcomed!

  • Introduction to the chemigram process
  • Overview of chemical reactions and how different resists interact with photographic paper
  • Introduction to darkroom techniques and handling photographic paper
  • Exploring the first process: manipulating the order in which paper is placed into darkroom chemicals to create varied effects

Session Two

  • Exploring the second process: using clay and tape as resist materials
  • Continued printing

Session Three
