An Satong Kawaran is a Bicolano phrase that translates to “In Our Absence.” It reflects Calvelo’s longing to connect memories
of a life left behind with new experiences unfolding during his transition to a new country.
Before migrating, the artist exposed several rolls of film in the Philippines, capturing his childhood home, places he worked as a
photojournalist, and final goodbyes. The same film was then re-exposed upon his arrival to Australia, layering new experiences over old ones. The resulting double exposures form dreamlike compositions that reflect an evolving sense of ‘home.’
