40th Birthday Celebration
In 2024, photo access will be celebrating its 40th birthday! To ring in this exceptional milestone, we will be having an afternoon-to-night event full of activities, celebrations and exhibition opening. We hope to see you all there.
Join us on Friday 25 October from 3pm to late for photo access’s 40th birthday extravaganza, celebrating four decades of creative brilliance in photography, film, and media arts. Explore our vibrant history with afternoon-to-night celebrations like no other, filled with engaging activities and the Dark Matter Residents’ exhibition to be opened by Tracey Moffatt.
The theme of the night is 1984, whether that’s the brightly coloured, big hair and big shoulder pads style of the 80s or the Big Brother dystopian world of George Orwell’s 1984 – you choose.
Get hands-on with a range of creative activities—make your own cyanotype sun print, capture a moment with a large format portrait, and explore the magic of scratch film. As evening falls, delve into the Dark Matter exhibition, featuring captivating works from our Dark Matter residents, complete with artist talks and live demonstrations. Don’t miss our AI slideshow tracing our rich 40-year history and exclusive T-shirt designs inspired by the theme of 1984.
Grab a bite, a frozen margarita, and join us for some very special birthday celebrations. Come be a part of this special celebration and help us honour our community and history as the longest-running photographic organisation of its kind in Australia!

from 3pm – Daytime activities (sun prints) / Dark Matter exhibition open
from 5pm – Bar open and Jarochos Taco truck serving food
from 5pm – Ella Barclay DJ set commences & continues on into the night…
5:30pm – Dark Matter Resident Sari Sutton darkroom demonstration
6:30pm – Speeches and exhibition to be formally opened by Tracey Moffatt
7:30pm – Dark Matter Resident Claire Paul artist talk in the gallery
8:30pm – 16mm scratch film projection with Nicci Haynes & Fiona Hooton
