School Holidays: Autumn Analogue Photography

Are you searching for a dynamic and engaging activity for your teen during the upcoming school holidays? The Autumn Analogue Photography Workshop at photo access is tailored for kids aged 13 to 16, offering a unique opportunity to explore the world of analogue photography. Over three immersive days, participants will delve into the fundamentals of analogue photography, honing their technical skills while unleashing their creativity in a supportive environment.

Led by experienced tutor Eunie Kim, teens will learn the essentials of film and camera operation, gaining practical insights into the art of capturing images on film. Against the backdrop of the scenic Manuka Arts Centre and its surrounding park, they’ll embark on a guided photo walk, discovering the beauty of their surroundings through the lens of a camera.

The workshop’s highlight is the hands-on experience in the darkroom, where participants develop their films and create photograms under expert guidance. This aspect of the workshop presents a unique opportunity for teenagers to master a challenging and rewarding skill, fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride in their artistic endeavours.

At the end of the workshop, parents have the opportunity to see their child’s work showcased in a special exhibition.

This workshop is for teens aged 13-16.

Program

Day 1, Wednesday April 17th: Understanding Film and Cameras

• Introduction to analog photography
• Overview of different types of film and cameras
• Hands-on session: Loading film into film cameras
• Photo walk around Manuka Arts Centre and park, capturing images on film

Day 2, Thursday April 18th: Exploring the Darkroom

• Introduction to the darkroom and its equipment
• Demonstration of film development process
• Hands-on session: Developing the film shot on Day 1
• Creating photograms in the darkroom while film dries

Day 3, Friday April 19th: Printing and Exhibition

• Making contact sheets with the developed film
• Selection process: Choosing the best images for printing
• Hands-on session: Printing three final prints in the darkroom
• Conclusion: Small exhibition and show and tell, where participants share their stories behind the photographs

What will be provided

• Film cameras
• 1 roll of film
• Darkroom supplies and equipment
• Printing material and paper
• Safety equipment such as gloves and aprons

What should I bring?

• Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor photo walks and darkroom activities (hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, backpack, jumper/hoodie)
• Closed-toe shoes, especially for photo walks and printing in the darkroom
• Notebooks or sketchbooks for jotting down ideas, notes, and reflections.
• Personal 35mm film cameras, must be in good working order (optional, as cameras will be provided).
• Lunch for each day
• Water bottles and snacks to stay hydrated and energised throughout the day.
• Any personal items or accessories that inspire creativity or enhance the photography experience, such as favourite photography books or inspirational images.
