Learn everything you need to know about getting your digital camera off automatic mode and take your photography to the next level!
Concept to Short Film is an inclusive, year-long course that guides you through the entire short film production process, from first ideas to the final cut. This unique mentored program is a supportive journey for those who would like to work in a structured way towards producing a short film, supported by an experienced filmmaker, your workshop peers, and photo access. This course will help nurture, create and share your vision – whether that results in a completed film or ongoing experimentation.
Under the mentorship of award-winning Writer/Director/Producer Nathan Hughes, you’ll explore all aspects of low-budget independent filmmaking without the need for any expensive gear. Nathan brings extensive experience and insight into the triumphs and challenges of creative freedom of filmmaking. His work has been supported by The British Council, Reykjavik International Talent Lab, London Screenwriter’s Festival and Creative Europe, and his dramas, docos and design fictions have been screened at prestigious international film festivals. Nathan is a supportive, down-to-earth mentor who creates a welcoming, collaborative space where everyone can thrive. photo access staff will also be on hand to support and assist you.
This course offers a blend of structure and creative freedom. You’ll work alongside your peers in regular sessions from March to October, building confidence and learning through shared feedback, film references, and practical insights into film grammar, technical skills and production tools. There is no pressure to finish with a polished film – the goal of this course is to support your growth and exploration in filmmaking. At the conclusion of the course, there will be an opportunity to showcase your film at a local screening with photo access.
Concept to Short Film is perfect for new filmmakers and creative amateurs with some basic video skills (even on a mobile phone is great!) and an interest in narrative or documentary formats. You’ll leave with fresh ideas, useful techniques, and creative connections.
