Concept to Publication 2024 Workshop

This immersive nine-month studio program was tailored for image makers keen on developing and curating a portfolio of work culminating in a unique photobook.

Renowned documentary photographer David Hempenstall was the guiding force for the 2024 participants. Throughout his career, Hempenstall has delved into personal and cultural memory, autonomy, archives, and the aftermath of conflict. His extensive experience includes documenting mass graves in Iraq and ongoing work in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, exploring multi-generational links and the potential emergence of a new nation-state in the Pacific.

During the workshop, Hempenstall led participants in advancing their creative practice while focusing on the photobook format. Participants delved into the history of photobooks, explored various approaches to the medium, from low-cost zines to refined digitally printed hardbacks, and researched, curated, and developed a photographic portfolio in object form. The hands-on workshop encouraged direct working methods and fostered an understanding of photobooks as tangible objects.
