Gerry Orkin
Gerry Orkin’s involvement in photography goes back decades. His documentary work with Indigenous communities is archived and held in the collections of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), the National Gallery of Australia and the National Museum of Australia, and has appeared in exhibitions, monographs and books.
In the mid-1980s, Gerry co-founded Photo Access, taught photography and participated in the centre’s community and documentary photographic projects, including in partnership with young people, people of colour, people with disabilities and with local services.
From 1986-1988 he was the photographic coordinator for the After 200 years project, a major documentary photography project undertaken by AIATSIS, that featured the work of 21 Australian photographers.
After nearly thirty years away, Gerry got back into making photographs. His current practice includes street and documentary projects, and collaborations with his partner, Julia Coddington. Together and separately, Gerry and Julia also teach street photography workshops.
