What will we be doing?

Over a weekend, you will learn the basics of black-and-white photography – from capturing images through to printing in the darkroom. You will learn how to develop film, make contact sheets and print individual images. Whether you are a first-time film photographer, or are looking for a refresher course, this two-day workshop is the perfect way to delve into the world of black and white photography darkroom printing.

This workshop is for the complete beginner right through to advanced photographers who want to learn the full black and white process, from shooting a roll of film using a traditional analogue SLR camera right through to developing your very our prints in the photo access darkroom.

photo access runs these workshops every quarter so if you miss out on this one, there’s always another one around the corner!

When & where?

Introduction to Black and White Darkroom (weekend course) will occur on Saturday and Sunday,
10 am to 4 pm each day at photo access.

Program

Saturday
Participants will meet at photo access and will be provided with a SLR camera and roll of 35mm B&W film. A few hours will be spend shooting as a group. Then the afternoon will be spent developing your film, followed by an introduction to the photo access darkroom by creating a contact sheet in preparation for the next day.

Sunday
This is a full day of fun spent printing your images in the photo access Darkroom.

What will be provided?

All required equipment and materials will be provided, including an analogue SLR 35mm Camera, a role of black & white 35mm film, photographic paper and all the chemicals and equipment required to process and print your negatives and photographs.

You’ll have a photo access notebook & pencil to take notes and will receive to take home digital PDF guide to black & white darkroom photography (just in case you forget something after the workshop!).

What to bring?

Your enthusiasm (and your lunch)! We supply you with a 35mm camera, film, paper and all other materials.

However, if you would like to bring along your own film camera, 35mm or medium format (120 film) you are more than welcome, but please make sure that your camera is in good working order!

The Fine Print

Enrolments for this workshop close at 12pm the Thursday before the course. As a not-for-profit, our financial margins are narrow and classes require a minimum number of participants to run. In the event that photo access cancels a workshop, refunds will be paid in full or a transfer allowed free of charge. If a class is postponed, we will endeavour to reschedule at a time convenient to enrolled participants.

photo access will happily refund or transfer workshop fees up to 7 days prior to the start date of the workshop. If less than 7 days’ notice is given, photo access can offer a partial refund of 50%. Alternatively, enrolment can transfer to another workshop with a 50% transfer credit. If less than 48 hours are given, no refunds or transfers can be given.

If you are unwell and unable to make the course, please give us at least 24 hours’ notice. If you are absent from the class and have not notified us beforehand, no refunds or transfers can be given.
