Calling all future filmmakers! This exciting 2-day workshop led by stop-motion animation experts Eleanor and Giovanni is the perfect way to spend your school break.

Explore fun themes like “When I Grow Up”, “In My Dreams”, or “Once Upon a Time” and bring them to life with the magic of paper cut-out animation! Learn animation techniques, create backgrounds and props, and even edit your film – all with the guidance of these amazing animators. The best part? Your creations will be showcased at the 2025 Canberra Short Film Festival – a chance to see your work on the big screen!

This workshop is for kids aged 8-12.

Dates & Time

Animate Your Dreams runs over two full days at photo access

Thursday October 10th and Friday 11th, 9am-4pm each day

Program

Day 1, Thursday October 10th:

On the first day, the class will focus on exploring the theme or question, creating the necessary items for the animation, and writing and recording the script. The day will consist of the following activities:

  • Introduction and discussion: the class will discuss their ideas about the theme and brainstorm ideas by doing worksheets based on the theme.
  • Writing a script
  • Photographing for puppets with Eleanor: students will take photos of themselves to create puppets.
  • Recording scripts with Giovanni
  • Making a storyboard or shot list
  • Making cut-out puppets, backgrounds, and props

Day 2, Friday October 11th:

The second day is all about animation, and the class will work on animating their film throughout the day. The day will consist of the following activities:

  • Animation
  • Editing
  • Making the credits

What do I need to bring?

  • Lunch for each day
  • Hat
  • Backpack
  • Sunscreen
  • Light jacket or jumper
  • USB (optional)
  • A tablet with camera (preferred), digital camera or phone with camera, as long as it is in good working order

What will be provided?

  • All materials and equipment for printing and creating images
  • Craft materials for animation
  • Microphones
  • Camera if students do not have their own
  • Opportunity to have short film shown at the Canberra Short Film Festival

photo access has partnered with St. Vincent de Paul Society Migrant and Refugee Program, Red Cross, and Multicultural Hub to offer children and families, who may have difficulty finding funds for school holiday courses, the opportunity to participate in these classes. These courses allow kids to express themselves creatively and are vital for learning at a young age.

The Fine Print

Enrolments for this workshop close at 5pm on Friday October 4th, 2024. As a not-for-profit, our financial margins are narrow and classes require a minimum number of participants to run. In the event that photo access cancels a workshop, refunds will be paid in full or a transfer allowed free of charge. If a class is postponed, we will endeavour to reschedule at a time convenient to enrolled participants.

photo access will happily refund or transfer workshop fees up to 7 days prior to the start date of the workshop. If less than 7 days’ notice is given, photo access can offer a partial refund. Alternatively, enrolment can transfer to another workshop plus a $50 transfer fee. If less than 48 hours are given, no refunds or transfers can be given.

If you are unwell and unable to make the course, please give us at least 24 hours notice. If you are absent from the class and have not notified us beforehand, no refunds or transfers can be given.
