This immersive nine-month studio program is tailored for image makers keen on developing and curating a portfolio of work culminating in a unique photobook.

Renowned documentary photographer David Hempenstall will be the guiding force for this year’s participants. Throughout his career, Hempenstall has delved into personal and cultural memory, autonomy, archives, and the aftermath of conflict. His extensive experience includes documenting mass graves in Iraq and ongoing work in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, exploring multi-generational links and the potential emergence of a new nation-state in the Pacific.

During the workshop, Hempenstall will lead you in advancing your creative practice while focusing on the photobook format. Participants will delve into the history of photobooks, explore various approaches to the medium, from low-cost zines to refined digitally printed hardbacks, and research, curate, and develop a photographic portfolio in object form. The hands-on workshop encourages direct working methods and fosters an understanding of photobooks as tangible objects.

Concept to Publication operates as a collaborative studio, featuring regular meetings, art historical research, one-to-one feedback, guided editing sessions, and group discussions. David’s mentorship is pivotal, complemented by the shared insights of the workshop group. PhotoAccess staff will provide additional support throughout the program.

Open to artists seeking a new or revitalized outlet for their creativity, Concept to Publication requires participants to have a collection of work or the capacity to create work during the program. If you wish to discuss specific requirements, reach out to the PhotoAccess staff team at [email protected].

Upon completion of the workshop, PhotoAccess invites participants to showcase their photobooks in a public display at the Huw Davies Gallery, scheduled for Nov/Dec 2024. This exhibition will be bolstered by a comprehensive media and marketing package.

It’s important to note that costs associated with the final production, such as printing, are not included in the workshop fee.
